The Westborough Food Pantry opened in 1986 providing approximately 30 people with food. Each family was given 1 bag of groceries per week. Mostly single people or couples received the food.
As of 2023, the Food Pantry provides food for over 150 Westborough families for a total of over 450 people each week; an increase of 70% just since November 2022. The amount of food each family receives is in proportion to the size of the family. We distribute an average of 5000 pounds of food each week to Westborough families in need. That’s over 130 TONS of food per year!
The Westborough Food Pantry is a “client-choice pantry”. Clients are able to shop in our store and choose the grocery items they wish. Families receive meat, eggs, milk and bread every week. Fresh fruit, vegetables and baked goods are also regularly available.
Westborough is an extremely generous community. Every year, town-wide food drives sponsored by groups such as the Postal Service Workers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Appalachia Service Project, and WASA (Westborough Athletic and Social Organization) yield approximately 15,000-lbs of donated food. WFD Professional Firefighters Local 3070 purchase fresh vegetables for our Thanksgiving distribution. Additionally, donations from residents, places of worship, schools, civic groups and businesses also provide us with food on a regular basis. Monetary and grocery store gift card donations enable us to purchase food items as needed.
In addition to donated food, we currently purchase approximately $11,000 of food per month including meat, bread, eggs and milk along with other items needed to restock our store shelves.
The Food Pantry has a completely volunteer staff of over 85 men and women. It takes more than 150 hours each week to purchase food, pick up and sort donated food and check expiration dates, stock the Pantry shelves, maintain our facility, handle administrative duties and staff our food pantry store.
